GCBC: beyond the first answer
Check the source behind an answer, build a deliverable from your own files, add a teammate and chat, and see what stays on this computer. Every step was run on the shipped app by the check that guards this page.
1. Open GCBC
If this is a new computer, start with the first-answer guide. In short: double-click GCBC and the page headed Welcome to GCBC opens.
2. Activate
Paste the key from your email and click Activate. The page says Activated.
3. Answer the setup questions
Answer the eight setup questions and click Save and open the board.
4. Add your documents
Click Add documents… and choose a folder. A progress bar shows how far it has got, and the status line says Done. with the counts when the index is ready.
5. This guide is on the board
Click Guides at the bottom left of the board. The page headed GCBC guides lists every guide that came with GCBC; click GCBC: beyond the first answer to read this one, on this computer, without going online. Go back to the board to follow it.
6. Check the source behind an answer
Ask a question. Under the answer GCBC names the file and the line numbers it quoted, marked your document. Open that file at those lines: the words are the same, because the answer is the passage itself and nothing is rewritten.
7. Everything it brought forward still matches your files
This holds for every passage GCBC indexed, not only the one you asked about: each passage reads, at the file and lines it is filed under, exactly as your file reads today. If you edit a file, add the folder again so the index follows it.
8. See the Doctrine behind a refusal, and declare a rule
Ask something your files do not hold. GCBC declines, and under the refusal it names the law it follows, for example Law 2 · Cite or refuse. The same numbered laws are listed in the Doctrine panel on the board. To add a settled rule of your own, type it in one sentence under Doctrine and click Declare: GCBC answers Declared as rule and the next number, and lists it after the others, on this computer.
9. Build a deliverable from your files
Under Build from what you already have, choose a kind of deliverable (for example Sales proposal), describe what you want in your own words and click Build. GCBC writes the deliverable from passages of your files and cites each one by file and lines. Build the same thing again and you get the same file, byte for byte: the page says same ask, same corpus, same bytes.
10. What stays on this computer
Your files, the index, your answers and every deliverable stay in GCBC's data folder on this Mac (Library/Application Support/GCBC). The board says it at the bottom: Nothing on this page reaches the network unless you turn on a connector. While you ask and build, GCBC talks only to this computer. A team, once you start one (step 13), sends only locked messages, through its relay.
11. Add a teammate
Click Team at the bottom of the board and open Users & plan. It shows your plan and how many of its users you have added. Type your teammate's address, for example teammate@yourcompany.com, and click Add user: they appear in the list and the count goes up by one. Close the panel and reload the board: Asking as now lists them.
12. Ask as your teammate
Choose the teammate under Asking as (they appear as Member) and ask. A member reaches your files and the company folder, and gets the same quoted passage, marked your document. On this computer there is no login: who is asking is chosen at the keyboard.
13. Start your team
To chat with a teammate on their own computer, open Team and then Set up. Under Start your team the box already holds the address of the relay GCBC comes with: the server that passes your team's locked messages between computers and never holds a key. Click Start team. The panel says On a team as you, the license holder.
14. Give your teammate an invite code
Open Users & plan, type your teammate's address again and click Add user. Under Invite code to give them GCBC shows a long code that starts with GCBCT1. Send it to your teammate yourself, by your own email or chat, together with your license key.
15. Your teammate joins
On their Mac your teammate opens GCBC, pastes your license key, answers the setup questions, then opens Team and Set up. Under Join a team they type their address, paste the invite code and click Join. Keep your Team panel open: your GCBC admits them on its next check. Your Users list then marks them joined, and on their computer Users & plan says team connected.
16. Chat
Your teammate opens Chat, writes a message to the whole team and clicks Encrypt & send. It appears in your Chat within a few seconds, marked e2e:v1: it was locked on their computer and only your team can open it. Reply the same way and your answer appears in theirs.
